We haven't had a chat about this yet. My thoughts: The biggest flaw is the lack of balance by adding an extra fixture that could be against Man Utd or it could be against Derby. Relegation and qu... Read More »

Is the BBC website annoying anyone else??

It's been about a week since the BBC website started including advertising.

I have no problem with this if only they had implemented in like...well...any other site would.

But instead the Beeb has been unnecessarily fancy - creating a space at the top of the page for the banner ad, and then about 2 seconds later, closing that space and moving all the content up.

The result is very disorienting. You either click just after the page has moved, or you find yourself starri…

Two Top Players: Agbonlahor and Cahill

Good to see these two guys scoring again at the weekend.

I've had my eye on Agbonlahor for a while now. He's the type of striker I like - fast, powerful, and scores all kinds of goals. I rather think of him as a new Alan Shearer. And I'm chuffed he's English - it makes up for Gareth Bale being bloody Welsh!

And Tim Cahill is my kind of midfielder as well. Turns up all over the pitch, tackles and scores goals. And oh, did he ever score a goal on Sunday! His first of the season,…

Phil,

Spent a few days in London covering the US team for CSRN. I found my conversations with local football fans fascinating. It seems the Premier League per your predictions has already lost many who now prefer lower league football or in the case of my ticket taker at Paddington Station (when he saw my US scarf) MLS, because as he says "the quality may not be as good but every team can win if they play by the rules."

I think the PL is about to implode. One guy told me he doesn't even watch any PL match. He is a Southend United supporter who goes to Wembley like he did last night for England matches and has many friends who have quit the PL.

Another guy told me he only watches the PL when he cannot get a CCC, or League one/two match to watch or attend. He supports Coventry.

Everyone cited the exorbitant ticket prices and the lack of competition as reasons to quit watching.

Your Rethinking Football book is going to be a huge hit!

"Also, since when did a business decide to do something simply because someone else might?" Iain Duncan-Smith
Uh, since the beginning of time? That's a pretty sorry argument. I'm not completely sold on this 39th game idea, but the arguments against have yet to convince me. Sentimentality, which is the theme of most anti-arguments, has never really been a blockade to making a buck. I don't think too many people really think that the EPL is the BEST, but what is arguable is whether it is the best-known. I don't have the answer for that. I believe Serie A did try something like this back in the 90's. Why it didn't work I don't know. The EPL is already an international league like it or not - 50% of owners are foreigners, over 50% of the players are foreigners, almost half the revenue comes from abroad, no English manager has ever won the Prem, etc. I need better arguments. And "What about the fans?" is not a good enough point. We are clients and they want our money. We don't have to give it to them. If people want to feel like they are watching a purely British league, check out the Coca Cola Championship or the lower leagues. Good stuff, great play, and, honestly, more exciting most of the time than the Prem. Thanks for the article post.

Thanks for that video! That has to be up there with one of the more strange decisions by a player in recent months. I like to watch Bikey at Reading, but he is prone to random behavior. I guess he took issue with the way the medical crew was treating his mate. Lay off the sport drink!

Hey Phil - nice work by 'Boro on the weekend!!!

And regarding your comments regarding advertising on the Beeb's website, this may show that advertising is bad for football in general....

Football, like life is unfair at times. The best example I can remember (which left me seething as a 12 year old) was the France v West Germany semi final in 1982's world cup. It's probably the best match I've ever watched. It was won by the Germans, but not without incident. Classic case of bad refereeing - and injustice. I've attached two videos which proves my point (I still get pretty wound up by it, and if I were ever to encounter any of the Krauts on the team, or that scu*bag that was the ref, I'd probably have to restrain myself (likely unsuccessfully) from letting fly a massive loogie in their direction. Italy should not have won the tournament - the French were the best team in 1982. If you can get your hands on a copy of the match, it's well worth it - it will convert any non football fan into one.

And here's the incident in question (which went unpunished).

Hi Phil,

As you say its great to be a gooner these days. I miss the Sat 7:30AM US game on FSC. It used to make getting dragged out of bed by the kids a lot easier to handle.
